This weekend, UVA’s Department of Music will present the regional premier of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass: A Theater Piece for Singer, Players and Dancers*” at The Paramount (Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.). The production of Mass involves over 90 members: University Singers, a professional soloist, an ensemble of adult actors/singers, a children’s choir, a modern dance troupe, and an orchestra. All in all, 150+ folks will be part of bringing this epic work to stage. Behind the scenes, WPC helped support this musical event by lending the choir room as a space for the children’s choir rehearsals. There are also three WPC members working on the project: Tom Bloom (stage design), Lynnanne Wilson (orchestra), and Nancy Paulson (children’s choir preparation).
*The Bernstein Mass was commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy and premiered at the Kennedy Center in WDC in 1971. It a musical drama and dance that follows a structure of a Mass interweaving the journey of the Celebrant (priest/minster) and his followers through belief/joy, doubt/fear, loss of faith/anguish and peace/reassurance. The scope of this work and its unconventionality have meant it is rarely performed – but, you can see it this weekend in Charlottesville!
