“We make the road by walking.”
This line from Antonio Machado’s poem, “Campos de Castilla”, suggests that the journey we are on is being formed as we take it. Christians have long used the image of journeying as a way to understand the life of faith. Brian MacLaren writes that this line from Machado’s poem suggests “the life of faith was never intended to be a destination…instead it was to be a road, a way out of old patterns and into new and creative ones. As a road, it is always being extended into the future.”
Since it began, Westminster has lived out this sense of faith as a journey, not a destination. Through formation, worship and service for all ages, this church shows that faith formation is a life-long process, one that is filled with special moments of celebration and recognition; this is nowhere more evident than in our youth program. For more than a decade, the community at WPC has made a particular commitment to the faith journey of our young people by supporting Pilgrimage.
Pilgrimage is an integral part of the Journey to Adulthood that forms the foundation for our youth faith formation. It stands as a marker in the lives of our young people as they move into a new level of involvement in the church and a personal commitment to God. As such, the trip takes place the summer after Confirmation. The upcoming pilgrimage to Colorado Springs will take place in June and will include time to enjoy and explore God’s natural world, to reflect on God and faith, to grow personally and spiritually, and to build relationships with one another.
Westminster recognizes the deep value of such an experience in these young people’s lives and as such, commits part of the budget each year to help make this trip possible for every youth in the J2A class. Yet those funds are not enough. As a result, the Youth Education committee plans, organizes and holds a silent auction. Through wonderful donations of goods and services, the silent auction helps raise funds to cover the cost of this spiritual pilgrimage. This Sunday is the Silent Auction. Come bid and buy; show your support for our youth program and contribute to the ongoing spiritual journey of our youth.
Consider it an act of hope and love. Through your support, you communicate the hope always present in a life of faith and you show your love of these young people as they journey on.
