Rockets and Stars

October 20, 2016 by Lynne Clements

stars

A few nights ago, NASA launched the Antares rocket from Wallops Island off the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia. I don’t really care about such things, but my husband does and he alerted me to the time of the launch, where visibility would be best and the precise location in the night sky where to turn my gaze.

Frankly, I didn’t pay attention. I was going to let this one pass.

Then at 7:35 PM, five minutes before lift off, my often prickly, rarely excited daughter called down from her room, “Mom, are you ready to go?” And so I put on my shoes and a jacket over my pjs, and headed outside to stand in the empty field across from my house and stare into the starry night.

For several moments, she and I stood silent, our heads back, taking in the vast expanse, sprinkled here and there with tiny dots of light. Some we decided were stars, others satellites or airplanes – none seemed to be the rocket.

Then, just as we turned to walk back inside, Anne exclaimed, “Look!” To our amazement, we saw the red glow of the launcher and then the afterglow of white as the rocket pulled away. We stood as Antares moved across the sky until our eyes could no longer see it.

As we stood on our porch, I realized the gift of the night watch. Even when we cannot see them, the stars and the rockets are shining brightly. When the darkness seems so present, when the shadows dim the light, and when our own inner gloom dulls life’s sparkle, I consider this good news – good news that is echoed in the gospel of John who reminds us that “the light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

May God’s word be to you like a star (or rocket) in the night sky, giving off light, catching you by surprise and shining in the darkness.

Blessings – Lynne

Set the World On Fire

September 28, 2016 by Westminster Presbyterian Church

“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”

Upon the occasion of my first sermon delivered at Westminster Presbyterian Church, I challenged us all to set the world on fire. This challenge and encouragement comes from a quote I discovered in a book published this year on Catherine of Siena.  And in the context of Stewardship season, to me, it means to set the world on fire with God’s grace, justice, and inclusive love. Through giving and unselfish service to others, we begin to discover our true identity in Christ Jesus. Catherine’s charge to future believers is straight forward. In essence, from the 14th century, Catherine says to the Church on the far horizon: If the world is going to change, if love going to overcome hatred, it will take people of faith who follow their consciences and pay attention to God’s Call.  As we discern what we will pledge this up coming year, let us seek to set the world on fire.

A New Message and a Song from Ken!

October 4, 2015 by Kate Brinkley

The Latest: A Song from Ken

The latest offering from Ken is a song for Sunday! Click here to listen.

A Video Message and a Prayer from Ken

Watch this video message, in which Ken uses the image of “grounding wires,” and “electrical current,” to give his pastoral perspective on living through these days of endless news stories and updates on the Coronavirus. This second link will take you to a video of Ken reading a prayer by Floyd Thompkins, vice president of San Francisco Theological Seminary and a friend to Westminster.
Through a series of messages like these, we hope to keep you connected to — and nurtured by — the Westminster community. We’ll send out another message tomorrow from Lynne on how to make the most of our time with family at home.
On Sunday, we’ll send out a link to a worship service in which you can participate from home — complete with a downloadable bulletin and a devotional to use throughout the week.
All these messages will be available at www.westminsterva.org , too.
Peace be with you.

Gathering for Worship Suspended

Services Available Online for March 22, 29, and April 5
In lieu of gathering for worship on March 22, 29, and April 5, Westminster will have services available online. But there will be no corporate worship (except in cyberspace!) on those Sundays. Visit www.westminsterva.org to participate in our online worship, starting at 11 a.m. each of these Sundays (also available throughout the week).
When you engage in worship from home, you’ll find a video recording of the service, as well as a worship bulletin. You can participate in worship by reading the prayers and scripture. There will also be a short devotional following the order of worship to guide you in prayer beyond the service.
To listen to Ken’s message from March 15, click here.
In keeping with these precautions, all committee meetings and other gatherings are canceled through April 5. Although the office will be closed, you can leave a message at 434-293-3133 or .
Remember to practice faith, not fear, while following the practical recommendations of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention: social distancing, hand washing, avoid large gatherings, etc. especially those with underlying health concerns and seniors (or any of us who love those folks!).
Blessings,
Ken,
Lynne,
Dorothy,
Megan and Jonathan,
