At 11 a.m. on Sunday, enjoy a traditional service of Lessons and Carols led by the Choristers and Singers choirs. Readings and carols retell the story of Christ’s birth, with candlelit singing of Silent Night.
In our ten-week session this fall the Life-Long Song group has enjoyed singing Psalms at the beginning of each of our meetings. We have also sung several rounds, including a setting of Psalm 150. In our exploration of music with texts on peace we learned an anthem by Michael Burkhardt entitled “Beloved, God’s Chosen,” with a text by Susan Palo Cherwien. We found it inspiring and comforting in these difficult times. Life-Long Song will not resume in the spring semester. Thank you to those who have come and participated. I have enjoyed making music with you all.
Beloved, God’s chosen, put on as a garment
compassion, forgiveness, and goodness of heart.
Above all, before all, let love be your raiment
that binds into one every dissonant part.
Within, call forth Wisdom, to dwell in you richly;
let peace rule your hearts and that peace be of Christ.
And from the heart’s chamber, beloved and holy,
let singing thanksgiving to God ever rise.
If you love to sing, but don’t want to come out to an evening rehearsal, or you would like a musical group that does not perform, then Life-Long Song may be just the thing that you are looking for. Life-Long Song is a musical gathering that meets on Thursday mornings from 11:00-noon for 10 weeks in the fall and 10 weeks in the spring. It is a daytime singing program for adults that provides a regular opportunity for making music in community and having fun, while improving physical health and mental agility. While designed specifically for older adults, anyone is welcome to join. No special skills or previous experience is necessary. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Megan Sharp, Director of Fine Arts.
This summer the theme for the Montreat Worship and Music Conference that I attended was “Then Sings My Soul!” taken from the refrain of the well known hymn, How Great Thou Art. If your soul is looking to join a community of song, you are in the right place. Westminster has choirs and musical experiences for all ages and abilities. Below you can find the rehearsal times for musical groups. We also have an all-choir potluck on Thursday, September 7, which is a good time to meet people in choir and enjoy a time of fellowship.
