The title of Parker Palmer’s 2013 book, “Healing the Heart of Democracy,” that forms the basis for the five-week adult education course beginning November 19 and continue through January 7th, was inspired by the following:
“The human heart is the first home of democracy. It is where we embrace our questions. Can we be equitable? Can we be generous? Can we listen with our whole beings, not just our minds, and offer our attention rather than our opinions? And do we have enough resolve in our hearts to act courageously, relentlessly, without giving up – ever – trusting our fellow citizens to join with us in our determined pursuit of a living democracy? -Terry Tempest Williams, “Engagement”, Orion, July-August 2004.
In this class we will listen to video clips of Parker Palmer, our fellow participants, and our own hearts to discover how each one of us may do the inner work of preparing ourselves for responsible – and responsive – civic engagement for the common good.
The book Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit, is available on Amazon in several formats and prices.
