Affirming Westminster's Values and Mission
As we continue to experience distressing and concerning events at the national, state and local levels, it can feel overwhelming to people of faith who are seeing their values challenged and their worldview destabilized on a daily basis. While we encourage congregation members to respond individually in whatever ways seem appropriate to each person, we do believe that collective acts are also very valuable and necessary. Thus we feel it is a critical time to visibly demonstrate the values and commitments that create Westminster’s identity and mission in our community and in the greater world beyond. One way to do that is to reinforce our church’s involvement in the following three important missions:
We are a Matthew 25 Covenant Congregation
We have joined other churches in the Presbytery of the James and throughout PC(USA) to live the call of Matthew 25, which commends us to actively engage in the world around us, so our faith comes alive and we wake up to new possibilities. Congregations who make the Matthew 25 pledge recognize Christ’s urgent call to be a church of action, where God’s love, justice, and mercy shine forth and are contagious. We Are Aligned With More Light Presbyterians
More Light Presbyterians engages over 230 congregations and thousands of individuals in the Presbyterian Church (USA), enabling Presbyterians to lead LGBTQIA+ service and advocacy in communities nationwide. More Light’s mission has always been to empower and equip individuals and congregations to live into their welcome for LGBTQIA+ people. For more information, click here.
We Are An Earth Care Congregation
Earth Care Congregations is a program from PC (USA) Environmental Ministries that encourages churches to care for God’s earth and honors churches that have committed to this important mission. Our outreach will encourage community involvement and public policy to protect and restore the earth. For more information, click here.
