Habitat for Humanity

One dimension of Westminster’s mission outreach and concern for justice is its partnership with Habitat for Humanity.  Stating its own purpose, Habitat  for Humanity “works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends.”  This congregation joins with many others  to further that goal of achieving adequate, affordable shelter for all families.

On at least one Saturday a month, Westminster volunteers join with folk from Presbyterian and other area churches to build (or sometimes renovate) houses with future occupants who could not otherwise afford them.  Under the oversight of Habitat for  Humanity of Greater Charlottesville, families are selected and guided in a process of no-interest funding and ‘sweat equity’ participation in a ten month building effort. Volunteer builders join them to erect a new home that is attractive, comfortable and in conformance with all safety and environmental standards.  A dream is realized, community is nurtured, and the love and justice of God is experienced.

Westminster volunteer builders need no experience---only willing hands and hearts.
They may work for one Saturday or many.  Tools and professional work site leadership are provided.  Work is generally from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm; lunch is provided.  Directions to the current work site, future work dates, and/or transportation are available.  A parish coordinator encourages participation, with a sign-up sheet on the table at the fellowship hall entrance.  Contact the coordinator or church office for further information.
