Students compare the teaching from the bible with a video presentation of the Sermon on the Mount.  Students will create a video about these teachings.

Younger students dress as Jesus’ listeners and share lunch on the hillside as they hear and discuss the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount.  Followed by a game acting out solutions to modern situations basked on Jesus’ teachings.

Students conduct taste tests exploring the difference salt makes in food and conduct experiments using candles exploring the qualities of light.

Holy Week

Art

Over the 4 weeks, we will create a huge mural tracing the events of Holy Week.  Adults will plan and outline the mural.  Each class will work on the section about one story using appropriate media.

Movie/Discussion

Present DVD that tells the story of Holy Week.  Older children are challenged to unpack the symbolism in the “The Parable” – a story of Holy Week events tols in the setting of a circus with Jesus as a loving clown.

Children will play a game of Jeopardy focused on the events of Holy Week.

Drama

Children will visit multiple centers, each featuring a key Holy Week event.  At each stop they will hear or act out one story and do an activity to explore its meaning.

Music

Children explore Easter hymns in the hymn book.  Older children then work in partners to paraphrase several hymns.  Younger children find hymns that include forms of “alleluia”.

Children view a DVD of the Empty Tomb story and read it from Matthew’s gospel.  Then, they view and discuss the part of “Charlotte’s Web” in which Wilbur deals with Charlotte’s death and the birth of her children.

Activities highlight how different people recall different things about the same event.  With this as background, they read and compare the fours gospel accounts of the empty tomb.
