Feasting on the Word: for First through Fifth Grades
Feasting on the Word is a new resource based on the Common Lectionary6, a yearly cycle of scripture readings and psalms used by many churches, including Westminster, to provide regular exposure to the whole range of the Bible in worship and especially in preaching. Everyone explores the same Bible passage every week—making it easy for families to learn and live out their faith together. Feasting on the Word provides connections between Church School and worship, invites children into the rhythm of the church year, encourages faithful Christian living and action, promotes lifelong spiritual formation, and incorporates various learning styles.
Grades 1-2: "Am I welcome here"?
These young learners are moving out from their families to explore the worlds of school and Church. They will share learning experiences that proclaim: You are welcome here! You belong to God and to this church family! Making the most of their love of stories, children will explore scripture in ways that engage their senses, their emerging skills in reading and writing, and their need to learn by doing.
Grades 3-4: "What does it mean to belong here"?
Third and fourth graders are growing in their desire to join teams and organizations; these older children will share learning experiences that address the many ways scripture shapes the identity of members of the body of Christ. Encouraging their love of questions and capitalizing on their desire to feel competent in their academic skills, these children will use their Bibles to dig into the stories of faith and share them with others.
Tweens (5th Grade): "What difference chan Christ make in my life"?
Tweens are on a journey from childhood into puberty, growing in reliance on social networks. Learning experiences for this age encourage investigation of the many ways Christian faith can shape life choices. Engaging their expanding ability to understand abstract imagery and their love of learning by interacting with peers, tweens will explore the biblical texts in order to investigate what the church teaches, wrestle with implications of Jesus’ teachings, and give voice to what they believe.
First Grade Worship Education Class
Each fall the First Graders participate in a special Worship Education program to prepare them to attend worship regularly with their parents. This class will occur from 10:30 - 12:00 on Sundays from September 25 through November 13 when the children will be publicly welcomed to worship during the 11:00 service. Parents will receive further explanation about this program shortly.
