About Us

   Interesting Historical Facts About WPC

  • Organized in 1939 by 81 founding members called to minister to young persons, faculty, and staff of the University.
  • Sanctuary was dedicated in 1939, the office building behind the Sanctuary built in 1956, and the fellowship hall and library completed in 1966.
  • The Prism building, on the corner of Rugby Road and Gordon Avenue, was purchased by WPC in 1956 and currently is home to several non-profit organizations that serve the community.
  • A cross was burned on the church lawn in the1950s because of the congregation's stand against racial segregation.
  • Today, the congregation actively stands for the rights of children, women, people with disabilities, varying sexual orientation, minorities and others, and led and supported efforts to lessen interracial tensions in the Charlottesville community.
  • Westminster helped relocate two Bosnian families to Charlottesville and continues to provide them financial and spiritual support.  
  • Today, WPC boasts 725 members including University and non-UVa-related individuals.
  • Westminster is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Presbytery of the James.
